Walk-in tubs for Schaumburg homes
Schaumburg's postwar ranches, split-levels and townhome communities each bring their own bathroom layouts. Here is what to plan for, and where Schaumburg seniors find local help.
- Real people on the phone
- One-day installation often possible
- DIY drop-ship option
- Helping families since 2012
A suburb built mostly after 1960
Schaumburg was a small farming village for most of its history and grew rapidly from the late 1950s onward, with large planned subdivisions followed by townhome and condominium communities. That history shows in its bathrooms. Many homes have a hall bath with a standard 60-inch tub and a smaller primary bath with a shower stall, often original to the house or updated once.
Those standard footprints are good news for walk-in tubs. The planning questions tend to be about which level the bathroom is on, the age of the plumbing and electrical, and association rules if you live in a townhome or condo.
We help Schaumburg families choose and install walk-in tubs, transfer tubs and roll-in showers. We do not have a local showroom; we plan by phone and photos and confirm measurements on site.
Ranches, raised ranches and split-levels
Single-story ranches
The easiest layout for aging in place: bedrooms and bathrooms on one level. A walk-in tub in the hall bath is often a direct swap.
Split-levels
Short half-flights between levels are a hidden challenge. If the bedrooms are up a half-flight from the main living space, the bathroom near the bedrooms is usually the right place for the safer fixture.
Raised ranches
The main bathroom is typically on the upper level with a full flight from the entry. Measure the stair width and the turn at the top for the boxed tub.
Slab or basement
Some homes are on slabs, others over basements or crawl spaces. Drain access affects how easy any plumbing adjustment is. Matching the drain side keeps it simple.
Townhomes and condos
Schaumburg has many townhome and condominium associations. Interior bathroom work in a townhome usually needs little formal approval, but associations often set rules for contractor parking, dumpsters and work hours. In condos with shared plumbing, the board or manager may want a scope of work, license and insurance documents before plumbing starts.
Many townhomes put the full bathrooms upstairs. As in larger two-story homes, think about whether stairs will stay manageable and whether a main-floor option makes more sense.
Ask the association early: what paperwork they need, whether a certificate of insurance must name them, and how far ahead to schedule.
What to update while the tub is out
Many Schaumburg homes are now 50 to 60 years old. When the original tub comes out, it is a good time to look at what is behind it.
- Shutoff valves and supply lines that have not been replaced in decades
- Blocking in the wall for grab bars, now or later
- A pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve to prevent scalding
- A bathroom fan that vents outside
- GFCI protection and, for jetted tubs, a dedicated circuit and panel capacity
- The water heater's age and size, since deep tubs need more hot water in winter
The Village of Schaumburg has its own building permit requirements. Your installer should tell you what applies.
Winter in a 1960s or 1970s home
Many of Schaumburg's earlier homes were built before modern energy codes. Bathrooms on exterior walls can be cold, and supply pipes in those walls may be poorly insulated. Water heaters may be original replacements that are now 15 or more years old. All of that affects how comfortable a deep walk-in tub is in January.
When the old tub comes out, check the insulation behind the plumbing wall and the condition of the water heater. A fast-drain system and a handheld shower help keep the bather warm while the tub empties. Our winter bathroom guide covers more.
Winter comfort list
- Insulate supply lines on outside walls
- Check water heater size and age
- Consider a heated backrest or in-line heater
- Add or upgrade the exhaust fan

Schaumburg questions
Will a walk-in tub fit in a Schaumburg hall bathroom?
Many hall baths have a standard 60-inch tub alcove, which suits many walk-in tubs. We confirm the alcove size, drain side and the path from the front door before recommending a model.
Where can Schaumburg seniors get free Medicare help?
Schaumburg Township's Disability and Senior Services offers Medicare and Medicaid counseling through certified SHIP counselors. The Illinois Senior HelpLine at 1-800-252-8966 can also connect you.
Do townhome associations need to approve a walk-in tub?
Interior work often needs little approval, but associations commonly set rules about contractor parking, dumpsters and hours. Condos with shared plumbing may require paperwork first.
My split-level has bedrooms up a half-flight. Where should the walk-in tub go?
Usually in the bathroom nearest the bedrooms, so the bather does not need to use stairs at night. If even the half-flight is getting hard, add sturdy handrails on both sides and talk with a doctor or therapist about longer-term plans.
Do you work with Schaumburg townhome owners?
Yes. We plan around association rules for parking, dumpsters and work hours, and we provide insurance and license documents if the association asks.
Can you check my 1960s water heater during the quote?
Yes. A photo of the label tells us the size, fuel and age, and we compare it with the hot water needs of the tub you are considering.
